EU AND CHINA MEET TO DISCUSS COMMON ENERGY CONCERNS

Brussels, 4 June 2004 - The 5th Eu-china Energy Conference took place in Brussels on 25 and 26 May 2004. The Conference was opened by the Vice President of the European Commission, Mrs Loyola de Palacio, and by the Vice Minister for Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China, Mr Ma Songde. More than 150 high-ranking representatives from industry, industrial associations and the public sector of both the European Union and the People’s Republic of China ensured a fruitful discussion on topics of common interest in the area of energy cooperation. The future cooperation will include discussions on the use of clean coal technologies and of renewable energies, on cooperation in the areas of gas and oil and on energy forecasts in general. The Eu and China aim at finalising the discussions on an agreement on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy possibly before the end of this year. The 5th Eu-china Energy Conference, held in Brussels, was another step in the intensification of relations in the field of energy between the European Union and China. Main areas covered in the discussions at the Conference included the security of energy supply, environmental/climate change considerations, energy efficiency, nuclear energy and renewable energy, as well as market access for European firms in the Chinese energy sector and energy market reforms. The event demonstrated the common intention to deepen cooperation in this important sector. In this context, the discussions at the Conference concluded that both China and the Eu face similar problems, notably as regards the security of energy supply for the next decades and sustainable energy development. The development of environmentally friendly technologies in the coal sector is therefore an important issue, which both sides decided to commonly tackle in the future. The Eu side has also declared its preparedness to share its considerable experience in the use of renewable energies with its Chinese partners. The Eu is prepared to support China in meeting the abovementioned challenges and to mutually exchange experiences. Both sides demonstrated their interest in a closer cooperation in these important areas.
