NEW ESERVER SYSTEM REDEFINES ECONOMICS OF MIDRANGE UNIX SYSTEMS FOR CUSTOMERS WITH OUT SACRIFICING PERFORMANCE FOR PRICE; SETS NEW PERFORMANCE RECORDS

Armok, N.y., February 10, 2003 - Ibm announced that in only two months since it became available, the 2000th eServer p650 has shipped. This new eServer system, the first to include Ibmīs newest Power4 microprocessor, is transforming the economics for midrange server customers by redefining the price/performance matrix; itīs affordably priced without making any compromises on reliability or performance. Priced 63 percent less than a comparably-configured full-featured Sun Fire 3800, the Ibm eServer p650 has the blazing performance and autonomic computing capabilities traditionally found only in high end Unix servers. Additionally, the eServer p650 out performs Sunīs v880 by as much as 100 percent in a key application performance measure. The eServer p650 was the first server to include Ibmīs latest 64-bit microprocessor, Power4, which takes advantage of Ibmīs most advanced 0.13 micron fabrication process and contains over 180 million transistors. This innovative technology yields a new generation of Power4 chips that consumes a third less power per processor than the latest version of the Sun Ultrasparc Iii chip at identical frequencies. The Power4 chip is available in the eServer p650 with 1.2 and 1.45 gigahertz. The Power family of microprocessors is among the most widely used in the industry and can be found in Nintendo game consoles, Apple computers and some of the worldīs most powerful supercomputers and storage systems. "The enormous success of the eServer p650 sends a clear message to customers that their days of being overcharged by competitors for under performing servers are the thing of the past," said Karl Freund, vice president, Ibm eServer pSeries. "Ibmīs Power architecture is an industry leader and the success of the eServer p650 is proof of the Power architecture becoming the standard for 64-bit computing. The vote is in and the eServer p650 is clearly the midrange Unix server of choice." "The Ibm Power4 microprocessor has set new standards of performance excellence," added Freund. "The eServer p650 offers industry-leading performance on the applications that our customers care about most." The eServer p650 offers great flexibility, with up to eight dynamic partitions. The p650 is designed to run the Aix 5L operating system and Linux simultaneously in separate partitions.
