  IBM DELIVERS ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES FOR MANAGING SURGES IN IT DEMAND

 
   
  Segrate, 11 marzo 2003 - Ibm announced a suite of autonomic computing software technologies that allow It systems to react automatically to unexpected surges in demand and dynamically deploy computing resources to handle them. Developed as a collaboration between the Ibm Research Division and Software Group, these technologies can predict the progression of sudden increases in workload and bring on additional server capacity to handle the volume, then free up capacity as the demand dissipates. Autonomic computing technologies are a key component to advancing today´s It infrastructure, giving hardware and software the ability to avoid outages by shifting workloads, defending against outside attacks and fixing them without human intervention. "In today´s world, where billions of devices and applications interact daily, enterprise leaders will need to be free to focus on managing the intricacies of business rather than the complexities of technology," said Alan Ganek, vice president, Ibm Autonomic Computing. "Ibm understands these issues and is delivering the technology that contributes to intelligent, open systems that can mask the complexity of It systems." The new software technologies are built to work with the latest versions of the company´s Websphere Application Server Version 5 and Db2 Universal Database version 8 software products. These technologies also have the potential to be used with third-party applications and platforms. Ibm Global Services is currently adapting these technologies to be included as part of its offerings. They will also be demonstrated at Ibm´s "Autonomic Computing: Dynamic Surge Protection" exhibit at Cebit, in Hanover, Germany next week. The three technologies are called "Adaptive Forecasting," "Rapid Reconfiguration" and "On-line Capacity Planning". By using sophisticated mathematical models and a novel model adaptation scheme, Ibm´s inique adaptive forecasting system can anticipate the progression of an unexpected surge in demand. The online capacity planning technology provides estimates of the resources required to defend the customer service levels for the projected demand. It then allows a hot swap of resources from one workload to another with no noticeable interruption to the end user. The rapid reconfiguration facility exploits new capabilities in Websphere Application Server Version 5.0 to rapidly add new nodes when more resources are needed and to quickly remove nodes when resource demands subside. There is no downtime to physically set up new resources and all of the configuration can be done in a matter of minutes, rather than hours or days. When the surge is over and traffic returns to normal, the system will automatically shift resources back to the original workload, thus maximizing efficiency of all available resources in the enterprise. The need for autonomic computing systems - technology that can manage and improve its own operation with minimal human intervention - is growing every day as It systems become more complex, more difficult to maintain, and more expensive to manage. Ibm´s autonomic computing products and technologies can allow companies to re-focus their resources onto mission-impacting development projects to reduce costs and improve productivity. By providing a more robust It infrastructure that can respond in real-time to a changing environment, these technologies can support closer integration of business processes and applications, helping customers transform their e-businesses to an on-demand mode of operation.
